9 Reasons YOU Should Celebrate International Yoga Day

by Padma Koty
YOGA  IS FOR EVERYONE ... INCLUDING YOU

International Yoga Day – June 21st – is drawing ever closer. If you are one of those smart gals and guys who will definitely be joining the rest of the world in shaking out its yoga mat, then that is wonderful.

But if you are sitting on the fence, thinking “Nah, Yoga is not for me,” or “I will start it some day, not now,” here’s 9 reasons for jumping off said fence and joining the millions around the world keenly preparing for IY D-day:

  1. Practicing Yoga every day to get yourself a healthy lifestyle has long been on your To-Do List. Only, it keeps falling off it for one reason or the other. A designated InternationalYoga Day (IYD) is just the pad to launch your resolution from. Plus, the whole world (almost) and their grandma are doing it. Why not YOU?!

  2. You and your pals in your college/office/housing-colony are planning to go trekking in Ladakh and you want to get into shape before that. IYD could help you commit to your fitness/weight-loss plans and be in fine shape for that planned super-trek. Also, take up Pranayama as a supportive measure. Your lungs will thank you for it. Truly.

  3. One or both your parents are slightly/quite/rather overweight, and someone told you regular practice of Yoga, especially Surya Namaskar, could help them jettison some unwanted pounds. Secret/ively register them for IYD, and then do the same for regular Yoga classes, so that they derive the benefits of committing to a Yoga-plan. Now you play the parent.

  4. Your neighbor from across your door told you he was sleeping better and has become less prone to colds after sticking to his Yoga regimen. And you use boxes of tissues every month cold catches you; and also sleep fitfully every night. Take the plunge on IYD, follow up with regular practice, and feel the difference.

  5. Your neighbor-auntie who lives across from your door is deaf to your pleas to try Yoga for her indigestion problems, and the excitement and exhilaration of IYD are just the ticket to make her come out of her refusal to take your advice. Ditto for neighbor-uncle who lives downstairs and suffers severely from acidity. On IYD, pile them all into your SUV and inspire them to change their gastric lives. But after IYD, help them continue to practice daily, too.

  6. You are exercised about the rate at which your hair is falling, and your cousin told you she saved herself from female-pattern baldness with Vajrasana, Utthanasana, and so on. And so, International Day of Yoga it is, cos’ you want to save your crowning glory. Tell this to all your balding male cousins/uncles too. (But be diplomatic)!!!

  7. Your sis and bro-in-law (or some dearly-loved couple you know) are frequently not seeing eye-to-eye. Tell them Yoga could help them put their relationship on more equanimous and peaceful terms, by releasing unrecognized or unrecognizable stress through Yogasanas. Play counsellor, discreetly, though.

  8. You have a chronic problem, say diabetes, and you would like to play an active role in managing it, instead of just passively following doc’s orders. Then Yoga is just the thing for you. And it helps you become resolute enough to keep off all those deadly, tempting, sweet-somethings, too!

  9. So, gather yourself/family/ friends/ neighbors, and whoever seems to be the right candidate and register for the nearest IYD event. You can even have more fun by pitching in as a group and volunteering your assistance in organizing that event. You could brighten up someone’s life with good health, help them find peace of mind, or optimize their lifestyle.
IMPORTANT: Have fun on IYD, but remember:  to reap the benefits, daily practice is a must. Always learn Yoga only from a qualified teacher. Also, before undertaking Yoga, it is recommended to take the advice of your registered medical practitioner if you have a medical condition, are pregnant, or have undergone surgery.
